Established

In 1927, the site was initially developed as an airport by Pan American World Airways. By 1936, the City of Alameda ceded the site to the U.S. Government. Closure

The base was recommended for closure in 1993 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process and officially ceased operations on April 25, 1997. Following its closure, the site has been under redevelopment, transitioning into a mixed-use area known as Alameda Point, which includes residential, commercial, and recreational spaces.

Redevelopment

The redevelopment of Alameda Point, the former site of Naval Air Station Alameda, is a transformative project aimed at creating a vibrant mixed-use community. The City of Alameda, along with Alameda Point Partners (APP), is spearheading this $1 billion project to convert the area into a transit-oriented neighborhood featuring residential, commercial, and recreational spaces.

Site A Development: This is the cornerstone of the redevelopment, covering 68 acres. It includes the construction of 800 residential units, up to 600,000 square feet of commercial space, and 15 acres of parks and open spaces. The first phase of Site A, which broke ground in May 2018, also includes a new ferry terminal at Seaplane Lagoon, enhancing connectivity to San Francisco

The General Storehouse

Building 08, known as The General Storehouse, played a crucial role during its time as part of the Naval Air Station Alameda. Constructed between 1939 and 1940, this building was primarily used for storage and logistics, supporting the extensive operations of the base. It housed essential supplies, equipment, and materials necessary for the maintenance and operation of naval aircraft and ships. The General Storehouse was an integral part of the base's infrastructure, ensuring that all necessary provisions were readily available to support the Navy's missions. Its strategic location and substantial capacity made it a vital component in the efficient functioning of the naval base throughout its operational years, particularly during World War II and subsequent military engagements. The building's robust construction and design reflect its significant role in the logistical network of the naval station, standing as a testament to the historical importance of Alameda Point.
